An article published in the Alcoholism & Drug Abuse Weekly newsletter highlighted Day One, a residential and outpatient addiction treatment organization that’s based in South Portland, Maine. The facility is unique in that some of its management staff has been with the organization for more than 35 years. Additionally, clinical staff turnover has been relatively modest. These are achievements that are quite uncommon given the high staff turnover that characterizes the behavioral health field. So how did they do it? Day One says it’s a result of an accommodating flex-time policy, financial support for full- and part-time employees pursing continuing education and licensure, stipends for advanced credentialing, and a culture that values the health and happiness of its employees.
